How to Impress a Boy by Baking

If you like the boy next to you, hop out of bed, make some coffee, whip up some pancake batter and leave it to rest on the counter. Hop back in bed, wake up cute boy then return to the kitchen to fry pancakes. The smell of coffee and cooking dough will eventually lure him out of bed. He’ll sit at the table. You’ll sit at the table. He’ll wonder how he got so dang lucky. You’ll wonder how you got so dang lucky. If he offers to help you do the dishes… marry him, immediately.

One of my boyfriend’s fabulous uncles celebrated his 42nd birthday on saturday night. A visit to their household isn’t complete without a full spread of home-cooked food, good company, and a consistent stream of delightful campiness.

    Kaimuki Grill

Went to Kaimuki Grill with some friends last night. It’s a bit of a dive bar, but the food portions and prices was the major draw. Another plus is that it’s not that popular of a place so we were sure to have plenty of seats.

The main draw was the Kalua Pork Nachos but we ordered almost one of every food item in a menu. The small feast fed 7 of my friends and myself nicely. Combined with the two friendly waitresses who refused to be called “Aunty” (they warmly replied, “Hey! We’re not THAT old!”) the atmosphere was totally welcoming and casual.

Some minor gripes or notes would be that the kitchen closes early at 9:30p, and they could be a little less skimpy on the amount of Kalua Pork they put on the nachos, but otherwise an awesome little joint.

Whew, ok Copy + Paste, Yelp Review.

PS. Thanking Gary Saito for letting borrow his nifty f/1.4 50mm. GORGEOUS BOKEH!

    P.D. Fruit Tart - P.D. + M.G.(Pineapple-[Lime-Kiwi])

Complements of Paula Deen, with a bit of improvisation. Thank you to all the newlyweds and your catering choices to have fruit tarts on the desert menu for me to gorge on and the cream cheese stepping stone to red velvets.

    4/8. To mi madre… and yours. ;)

    Bay Ridge Empanadas

    Bay Ridge Empanada

I don’t understand how caterer’s do it; the process of making individual servings, one at a time. The recipe I got half-assed it with using store-bought empanada wrappers but I couldn’t find them at my local safeway. Luckily, mi madre had some random empanada wrapper recipe laying around which came out pretty tasty. The seasoned ground beef filling wasn’t bad at all either.

What is this… 3/8? I bought a tart-tin today, hoping to sample some fruity bakelessness in the near future.

    Hokkaido Bread
I actually had two batches and totally obliterated the first batch due to faulty instructions. It’s highly suggested to stick by your baking goodies and check on them every 10 or so minutes.
I improvised yellow cake mix in place of the original milk powder and cake flour that the recipe i found called for, yielding not bad results.

    Yorkshire Puddings

    Yorkshire Puddings

The first time I ever had Yorkshire Puddings was back in London during my 2004 obligatory post-grad eurotrip. On that night, my companions and I sat down at my Aunty’s dinner table and were presented with a home-cooked meal. The feast was probably the only home-cooked meal most of us had in all of Europe for the month or so we were up there. Jumping from country to country, ducking into convenient stores and kebab stands really nurtured the appreciation for the warm soul food.

I think that memory is what I was trying to bring back by making this batch of puddings, today. I’d no idea how easy it was to make. In retrospect, although the flavor is what I expected it to be, it just wasn’t as tasty given the current context.

Meh. Strike one recipe off the bucket list.

    Shutterbuggin’

The NYT has a piece today called “People Who Photograph Food and Display the Pictures Online,” about obsessive food-photo bloggers, like a neuroscientist who has 9,000 pictures of food up. NINE THOUSAND.

I have to agree with my still-my-new-best-friend Andrew Zimmern, who says “I care what SOME people eat and think about their food life BUT not what EVERYONE eats.”

It’s not like they are pictures of CATS. There can never be enough of those.
